IPL Photofacial in Amsterdam-Zuid

IPL Photofacial is a light treatment that targets redness and pigmentation in a single session. The light is absorbed by red (blood vessels) and brown (pigment) in the skin, so that broken capillaries fade and pigment spots lift away. The result: a more even, calmer skin with a fresher complexion — with no significant downtime. At Juuls Clinic in Amsterdam-Zuid, IPL is used for rosacea, redness, sun damage and pigmentation on the face, neck, décolleté and hands.

Who is IPL for?

IPL works on anything red or brown in otherwise healthy skin. The most requested treatments at Juuls Clinic:

  • Broken capillaries and rosacea — diffuse redness on the cheeks and nose, flushing and fine vessels fade. IPL is the treatment of choice for redness over a larger area.
  • Pigmentation and sun damage — age spots, freckles and sun spots on the face, décolleté and hands darken, flake off and disappear.
  • Dull, uneven skin — by treating redness and pigment at the same time, the complexion looks more even and fresher.
  • Décolleté and hands — the areas most exposed to the sun, where pigment and redness often go together.

Individual, thicker vessels (for example around the nostrils) are not treated with IPL but with the vascular laser. Melasma is not treated with IPL — laser toning is better suited. We determine which treatment fits your skin during the intake with the Observ skin scan.

How does IPL work?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is not a laser but broad-spectrum light with a filtered wavelength. This light is selectively absorbed by haemoglobin in blood vessels and by melanin in pigment spots. The resulting heat closes the fine vessels and breaks down the pigment; the surrounding skin is left untouched.

Because IPL works on colour contrast, the treatment is most effective on fair skin and is not performed on tanned skin — which is why it is mostly scheduled in autumn and winter.

What to expect during treatment

  1. Preparation — the skin is cleansed. You wear protective goggles and a cooling gel is applied.
  2. IPL — the handpiece is placed on the skin area by area and emits pulses of light. You feel a brief warm snap, similar to an elastic band.
  3. Aftercare — the skin is soothed and protected with SPF 50. You can go straight back outside.

Results and recovery

  • Immediately — the skin is slightly red and warm; this fades within a few hours.
  • Days 1–10 — pigment spots darken and look like coffee grounds. This is the pigment rising to the surface before flaking off. Do not pick.
  • After 2–3 weeks — spots have disappeared or are clearly lighter, redness is calmer.
  • After the course — an even complexion. For rosacea we recommend 1 to 2 maintenance treatments per year.

For lasting results we recommend 3 to 5 treatments, 4 weeks apart. Sun damage on the hands and décolleté often responds after just 2 sessions.

Combining IPL

IPL + mild peel — a mild peel after the IPL for immediately smoother, more even skin. Especially for dull skin and superficial pigment. Discussed during the consultation.

Acne treatment Light & Peel — IPL on inflammation and redness, followed by a peel. €250.

Full Face Photo & Laser — IPL over the full face, immediately followed by laser toning. In one session: redness and pigment gone, plus finer texture and glow from the laser. The complete answer to dull, reactive, uneven skin. 50 min, €375 (€450 separately).

Frequently asked questions about IPL

How much does an IPL treatment cost in Amsterdam? At Juuls Clinic, IPL Photofacial costs €225 for the face and €170 for cheeks and nose. Smaller areas such as nose or chin from €100. Packages of 3 or 5 treatments offer better value.

Does IPL help with broken capillaries and rosacea? Yes. IPL is the most widely used treatment for diffuse redness and fine vessels on the cheeks and nose. After 3 to 5 sessions the skin is noticeably calmer; for rosacea, 1 to 2 maintenance treatments per year keep the result.

Is IPL the same as BBL? BBL is a brand name for an IPL device; it works in the same way with broad-spectrum light. At Juuls Clinic we treat the same indications with IPL and combine it in the Full Face Photo & Laser with laser toning — for deeper pigment, melasma and glow, which IPL alone cannot reach.

Do pigment spots disappear completely? Sun damage and age spots usually do, in 1 to 3 sessions. Melasma does not — for that we recommend laser toning combined with homecare. We tell you this honestly during the intake.

Does IPL hurt? You feel a brief warm snap with each pulse, similar to an elastic band against the skin. The cooling gel and cooling system make it well tolerable.

How many treatments do I need? Usually 3 to 5, 4 weeks apart. Sun damage on the hands and décolleté often responds after just 2 sessions.

Why do my pigment spots get darker first? That is the pigment broken down by the light rising to the skin's surface. Within 5 to 10 days it flakes off and the spot is lighter or gone.

Can I have IPL in summer? Preferably not. We do not perform IPL on tanned skin, and you need to avoid direct sun for the first 4 weeks after treatment. Autumn and winter are the best time.

Is IPL suitable for darker skin? No. IPL works on colour contrast and is therefore not suitable for skin type IV and above. For darker skin we use laser toning or microneedling.

Can I have IPL during pregnancy? No. We do not perform IPL during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, when using light-sensitising medication, or after a recent sun holiday. We always discuss your medical history during the consultation.
