Which scars do we treat?
- Acne scars — pits, ice-pick scars and rolling scar tissue on the cheeks and temples. The most treated scars at Juuls Clinic.
- Surgical scars — caesarean, breast surgery, abdominal wall, joint surgery. Often tight, hardened or discoloured.
- Stretch marks — from pregnancy, growth or weight change on the abdomen, hips, thighs and breasts.
- Burn scars — hardened, shiny or tight tissue that limits movement.
- Red or raised scars — fresh scar tissue that stays red or becomes hypertrophic.
The earlier a scar is treated, the better it responds. A surgical scar can be treated from six to eight weeks after the procedure, once the wound has fully closed.
How do we treat scars?
No two scars are the same, so we combine techniques per scar:
- Fractional laser — creates micro-columns in the scar tissue, prompting the skin to break it down and replace it with new collagen. For pits, hardened and uneven scars.
- SkinPen microneedling — sterile needles stimulate the skin from within; safe for every skin type and the first choice for acne scars and stretch marks.
- Tixel — controlled heat without light, suitable for darker skin and for scars close to the eyes.
- IPL — fades the redness in fresh or red scars.
We determine the best combination during the intake with the Observ skin scan.
What to expect during treatment
- Intake — we assess the scar, your skin type and the age of the scar, and draw up a treatment plan with a price quote and reimbursement information.
- Treatment — the skin is cleansed and numbed where needed. We then treat the scar with the chosen technique(s).
- Aftercare — the skin is soothed and protected. You receive aftercare advice and, for body scars, advice on silicone and scar massage at home.
Results and recovery
- Immediately — the skin is red and warm; after laser and Tixel, light flaking follows in the days after.
- After 4–6 weeks — the scar is softer and flatter; redness reduces.
- After the course — the full result is visible after 3 to 6 months; collagen production continues for months after the last session.
Usually 3 to 6 treatments are needed, 4 to 6 weeks apart. A scar never disappears completely, but it does become clearly flatter, softer and less visible — we tell you this honestly during the intake.
Is scar treatment reimbursed?
Scar treatment by a skin therapist is often partly reimbursed by Dutch supplementary health insurance (aanvullende verzekering), without a GP referral. How much you get back depends on your policy: some insurers reimburse a fixed amount per year, others a percentage or a maximum per treatment. Basic insurance does not cover scar treatment. Check your policy under "huidtherapie" or ask us during the intake — we are happy to help with the claim.

Frequently asked questions about scar treatment
How much does scar treatment cost in Amsterdam? At Juuls Clinic, scar treatment starts at €110 for a small scar and €150 for a large scar. Acne scars from €150 (small area), €250 (cheeks) or €450 (full face) per session.
Is it reimbursed? Often partly, via supplementary insurance and without a referral. The amount differs per policy; basic insurance does not reimburse.
When can a scar be treated? As soon as the wound has fully closed, usually six to eight weeks after surgery. Old scars can always be treated but respond more slowly.
Can a scar disappear completely? No. A scar becomes flatter, softer and less visible, but the skin never returns exactly to how it was. For acne scars, 50 to 70% improvement is realistic.
How many treatments do I need? Usually 3 to 6, 4 to 6 weeks apart. Fresh scars respond faster than old ones.
Does it hurt? The skin is numbed beforehand with a cream. You feel warmth or pinpricks; most clients find it well tolerable.
Can darker skin be treated? Yes. SkinPen and Tixel are safe for all skin types; the fractional laser is set more cautiously.
Does scar treatment also help with itching and tightness? Yes. By making the scar tissue softer and more supple, itching, tightness and restricted movement usually decrease.
